Shawshank Redemption is about many things. It is about a corrupt criminal institution, which offers no hope, and no redemption. It is more importantly about two friends who come from completely different backgrounds. Andy was framed for murder and Red was found guilty of committing a robbery. Andy never gives up hope that he will one day find freedom even if he has to take it. Red, on the other hand, gives up all hope, functioning fully within the confines of the system. He has been institutionalized for decades until one day, the Parole Board surprisingly grants him his freedom. He discovers a letter that his friend Andy has left for him. It it, Andy tells Red, "Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."
